Acquiring the citizenship of the Republic of Moldova by naturalization

Citizenship of the Republic of Moldova may be granted upon application to a foreign citizen or stateless person with legal and habitual residence on the territory of the Republic of Moldova, who complies with the provisions of the Constitution, has passed the test for the assessment of the level of knowledge of the Romanian language and has legal sources of income, provided that one of the following conditions is met: 

  • has been domiciled on the territory of the Republic of Moldova for at least the last 10 years. For stateless persons, refugees and beneficiaries of humanitarian protection and political asylum, this period is 8 years;  
  • has been domiciled on the territory of the Republic of Moldova for 5 years before reaching the age of 18;
  • has been married to a citizen of the Republic of Moldova for at least 3 years and has been continuously domiciled on the territory of the Republic of Moldova for the last 3 years;
  • has been domiciled on the territory of the Republic of Moldova for the last 3 years to parents or children (including adoptive parents or adopted children) who are citizens of the Republic of Moldova.

The term of legal and continuous stay on the territory of the Republic of Moldova of the foreigner shall be calculated from the date of authorization by the authorities of the Republic of Moldova of his/her stay on the territory of the country. The date of authorization of stay shall be deemed to be the date of issuance by the competent authorities of the document confirming the foreigner's right to stay in the territory of the Republic of Moldova. Proof of legal and continuous stay shall be provided by official documents issued by the competent authorities of the Republic of Moldova or on the basis of information from the State Population Register.

Requirements for the applicant: foreign citizens, stateless persons, beneficiaries of international protection. 

The application for acquiring the citizenship of the Republic of Moldova by naturalization may be submitted in person or through a proxy, the latter having a power of attorney authenticated by a notary or other persons authorized by law to perform such function.

    Step 3. Processing and Examination

    1. Facial image capture and signature scanning;
    2. Completion of the electronic form and printing of the G1 application-questionnaire;
    3. Sending the information electronically and the application with the set of paper documents to DIDCRP;
    4. Processing of the G1 form by the Information Register Update Section;
    5. Verification of the respective application and the related set of documents and its coordination with the General Inspectorate for Migration and the Intelligence and Security Service;
    6. Forwarding the respective application and the related set of documents to the Commission for Citizenship and Political Asylum Issues under the President of the Republic of Moldova for examination according to the competences;
    7. Issuing the Decree of the President of the Republic of Moldova on granting the citizenship of the Republic of Moldova;
    8. Execution of the Decree of the President of the Republic of Moldova on granting the citizenship of the Republic of Moldova.
